Tal.: Rahuri, Dist.: Ahmednagar
Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, has been established in 1969 by Act of
Government of Maharashtra at Rahuri, Dist. Ahmednagar, on the basis of Land
Grant College in America. The
jurisdiction of MPKV comprises of ten districts of Western Maharashtra. They
are Jalgaon, Dhule, Nandurabar, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Satara, Pune,
Sangli and Kolhapur. The name of a
Great Social worker and Farmers’ Leader in 18th
Century, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, has
been given to the Krishi Vidyapeeth. At
that time, he suggested Primary Plans for the developments in Agriculture to
the Government. He always say that “If
farmers wants to modernize their farming, they must educate their children and
that education power should be used in farming occupation.”
There are three main objectives of MPKV, which are Agricultural education, Research and Extension Education. MPKV has been performing its’ important role in giving the correct direction to the Agricultural development Programmes of Maharashtra State from three decades.
Maharashtra state stands 3rd
in the country by geographical area and manpower. Out of the total geographical area of the State (307.78 Lakh
ha.), about 59 per cent (181.82 Lakh ha) area is under cultivation. In MPKV
Jurisdiction, the total area under cultivation is 73.46 Lakh ha, out of which
only 10.00 Lakh ha is irrigated land. That is remaining 64 Lakh ha of land is
dependent on the rainfall, which includes 80 per cent of the drought prone area
of State. From this analysis, one can understood the two distinct situations in
the MPKV Jurisdiction. For this purpose, the Agricultural Education, Research
& Extension Education programmes are being planned and executed very
efficiently.
